In celebration of both World Lion and World Elephants Days, the WCFF hosts an evening of films with discussion to celebrate these iconic species. to inform the public how important they are to the biodiversity and health of the oceans.
Just thirty years ago there 250,000 lions in Africa, today less than 18, 0000. The Asiatic Lion which is restricted to a small area in India numbers less than 550 individuals.
The same is even more true with Elephants. In the 1980’s there were 1.2 million elephants in Africa, today less than 300,000. In Asia the species is less than 30,000 in the wild. Poaching and habitat loss have taken their toll on all three species of elephants and if the current rate of deforestation and habitat loss continues Elephants will have no place to live in the wild.
